Presentation lecture under the title “Equal opportunities for everyone” was held on the 3rd of December in Belarusian state technological university in the frame of “I was born” project. The lecture was held by Elena Krachkovskaya, a representative of “Down Syndrome. Inclusion” association, a “sunny” boy Iliya’s mother.
The aim was to inform students about people with Down syndrome, their peculiarities, abilities, opportunities and social acceptation.
The students were also informed about the birth statistics and basic knowledge of Down syndrome. Children brought up in families and surrounded by love and care break negative stereotypes about people with Down syndrome. They have specific limits, but they are limitless in their abilities, talents, love and self-expression. Elena mentioned successful cases of people with Down syndrome in the world and in Belarus. She also talked about her son and support system of “special” kids in our country.
More than 60 students and teachers attended the lecture, listening to Elena’s personal experience very attentively.
The specialist of “Fate and Hope” association informed the listeners about “I was born” project realizing by “Down Syndrome. Inclusion” association. The project supports families with kids who have development disorder(the support starts from maternity hospital). The importance of forming a friendly atmosphere in society towards people with disabilities was noted, because it can happen to everyone.

The UN General Assembly declared December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and called on UN member states to carry out events to mark this day in order to facilitate the integration of people with disabilities into society.
According to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, people with disabilities have equal rights with all citizens of the country.
In 2015, our country signed the Convention on People with Disabilities, in 2016 it ratified it. The purpose of the Convention is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment by all persons with disabilities of all human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as to promote respect for their inherent dignity.
