The training on the topic “Psychological assistance and support for families raising children with Down syndrome” was held on November 4, 2019 at the Minsk City Center for Social Services for Families and Children. The training event was organized by RSBOO Down Syndrome. Inclusion ”in the framework of the project“ I was born! ”.

The training was held with the support of the Interdistrict Center for Early Intervention (CRV): the psychologist of the CRV Doronina Oktyabrina Veniaminovna was the host.

In the first part of the training, parents were asked to reflect on the questions: “What do you like about your baby?”, “Why are you proud of your child?”, “What qualities would you like to see in your child?”, “What do you need work on? ”,“ How do you plan to do this? ” Parents learned to consider in their children, first of all, the good: strengths and qualities, abilities. Acceptance and love - this is what should be the basis for setting goals and creating conditions for the development of the child.

The topic turned out to be interesting and important for both moms and dads, who were active participants in the training. Parents openly touched on the issues of their anxieties and problems associated with parenting and caring for children, talked about love and affection for children. They expressed their desire and readiness to change themselves and change their environment, so that this would help create an environment for the harmonious development of their beloved children. There were emotions, and advice, and support, and innovative solutions.

Parents had the opportunity to receive from a specialist not only answers to questions about approaches to working with families, psychological assistance, assistance in creating confidence and inner comfort, but also answers to questions about the formation and development of children's everyday skills.

At the end of the training, parents received informational material on Down Syndrome.

10 parents and 3 specialists took part in the training event.

Reviews of some parents:

- I liked the training, it helped me to deal with my fears. I received accessible, interesting and useful information.

- A useful meeting. A lot of necessary information. Competent answers of a competent specialist.

- Thanks for the training, a very useful meeting. I recommend to hold such meetings more often, and also create a club for parents to communicate.

The project “I was born!” Is implemented by RSBOO “Down Syndrome. Inclusion ”in cooperation with maternity hospitals, centers for early intervention, the Institution for assistance in difficult life situations,“ Fate and Hope ”, the State Institution“ Minsk City Center for Social Services for Families and Children ”.
